Tesla Model Y Long Range 2022


 It has been a long two years for European Tesla fans. The Tesla Model Y has been on the road in the US since 2020, but only now has the compact SUV arrived here.

Based on the Tesla Model 3 saloon, the Model Y adds a degree of practicality, a chunkier stance and a heftier price. Starting at £54,990, the Long Range tested here is one of two variants, beside the £64,990 Performance.

It uses the same battery pack as the Model 3, at an estimated 75kWh (Tesla is notoriously coy about capacities), which supplies energy to two motors, positioned at the front and rear, for 434bhp and 424lb ft of torque.

Power delivery is smooth and instant. In a car of this size, it can be face-melting. Four-wheel drive keeps you planted to the road, particularly in the corners, while the steering is also a strong point. Despite weighing the same as a rhino, the Model Y handles dependably and smoothly. There isn’t too much feel, but you feel confident in corners, especially with the lighter Comfort steering mode.

The most noticeable change the Model Y brings over the Model 3 is its vastly improved practicality. It’s 181mm higher and 50mm longer than its saloon sibling, so head room and rear leg room are ample. The spacious cabin also feels light, thanks to the huge standard panoramic roof.

There are several big storage areas dotted around the car and it has a huge 854-litre boot, increasing to a van-like 2100 litres with the rear seats down (plus a 117-litre ‘frunk’).

In what is otherwise a widely refined package, the ride is a bit of a letdown. On the standard 19in Gemini wheels, it feels rigid, if not uncomfortable or boneshaking. The optional 20in wheels could exacerbate the problem, as we experienced abroad last year.

The interior looks wonderfully clean and tidy – perhaps too tidy for some, because there’s no instrument display and physical controls are limited to two scrollers on the steering wheel; buttons to open the doors; typical window switches; and two stalks behind the steering wheel that control the indicators, the screenwash, the cruise control and Tesla’s effective Autopilot functions.

Mercedes-AMG SL gains 2.0

  The   Mercedes-AMG SL   has gained a new entry-level variant featuring turbocharger technology that, the firm says, is directly derived from   Formula 1 .  The rear-wheel-drive SL 43 is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, producing 375bhp and 354lb ft of torque. The model also benefits from a 12bhp boost from a 48V belt-driven starter-generator. As standard, the SL 43 is equipped with an electric exhaust gas turbocharger, which,  Mercedes  says, is a world first for a series-production vehicle.  The technology, which is the same as that used on  Mercedes-AMG  F1 cars, adds a 4cm-thick electric motor to the turbocharger shaft. Mercedes-Benz EQS450+ First Test

   We  already tested the EQS580 , but this is our first go in the 450+. The test results were predictable. Down 187 hp and a driven axle to the EQS580, the 450+ takes 1.7 seconds longer to reach 60 mph. That's quite a disparity, given how the 450+ is nearly 300 pounds lighter, but remember: The less powerful EQS still weighs more than 5,500 pounds. Around town, there is plenty of pep for shoehorning the large EQS into gaps in traffic, but acceleration tapers off noticeably above freeway speeds. As for range, the EPA says a 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS450+ can do 350 miles on a single full charge (just 10 more than an EQS580). We put more than 200 miles on our test car during a week of parking it outside overnight in cold weather without charging, after starting with an almost-full battery pack (with about 300-some miles of range showing) and never once worried we'd run out of juice.   With the arrival of the new   Kia Sportage , it's clear that the comapy execs at the apex of   Kia ’s corporate hierarchy apparently don’t like to dwell on the company's heritage, and perhaps that's understandable. Kia's rapid transformation from dumpy, irrelevant duckling to unambiguous class leader (hello  Kia EV6 ) borders on the stuff of industrial legend. Conversely, the people now tasked with marketing the company as a high-tech neophyte and legitimate premium-brand challenger feel that the less the public knows about its rustic back catalogue, the better.
